What Your Acne Says about Your Health

Acne can make you feel self-conscious about your appearance and can have a negative impact on your life. Having acne doesn’t mean that you have dirty skin. It is simply a result of bacteria getting into your skin and a pimple is formed.

The most common way that bacteria gets into your skin is when too much sebum – oil produced by sebaceous glands that are essential for hair and skin – is produced and the oil clogs pores trapping dirt, bacteria and dead skin cells in the pore. The other ways, that is when skin dries out, cracks and peels bacteria can get into the skin; and another is caused by minor cuts in the skin by shaving.

Properly caring for your skin and using the right acne treatment you can get rid of acne. You can improve your confidence and self-esteem and have the healthy skin that you want.

For examples, to treat problem acne use ointments that have benzoyl peroxide, a powerful cleanser that gets rid of acne quickly. To clean out your pores and prevent acne facial cleansers and acne creams should have salicylic acid, a powerful antibacterial agent. To help get rid of dead skin cells and dying skin use products with resorcinol and sulfur.

Acne And Your Skin Type

There are 5 basic skin types, and knowing which kind you have can help you to treat and prevent acne. Every kind of skin will react differently to different treatments, you want to make sure that you are getting the right kind of treatment for your skin so that you can properly and effectively get rid of acne and prevent it.

1. Oily Skin

Oily skin produces more sebum oil than is needed. To determine if you have oily skin in the morning when you wake up before washing your face use some toilet paper and wipe your face, if there is oil on the toilet paper you have oily skin. Touching your face throughout the day you may feel the oil on your skin. The oiliest places are the cheeks, nose and forehead. You skin may appear shiny, have large pores and coarse.

Caring Tips: Proper care includes cleansing the skin twice a day and you should do a body or facial scrub once a week.

2. Normal Skin

Normal skin produces the perfect amount of sebum oil. Your skin will feel supple and elastic. When determining your skin type your face will have minor or no traces of oil. When touching your face throughout the day you may feel minor traces of oil, but not very much. Wiping your face with a cloth there won’t be any traces of sebum oil either. Your skin complexion looks even and healthy. Normal skin is usually smooth, clearer and coloring is even. This type of skin requires the least amount of care and ages the best.

Caring Tips: Proper skin care includes cleansing the skin one to two times a day and you can do a body scrub and facial mask once a week.

3. Dry Skin

Dry skin usually looks very good while young, but is prone to wrinkles and dry spots. If you wipe a cloth on your face there will be no traces of oil on it, and if you wipe your hand you won’t feel any oil either. Dry skin will flake and crack especially in the cold months where humidity is low. The skin may feel tight, itchy and irritated.

Caring Tips: Proper care for dry skin includes cleansing the skin once a day, moisturizing the skin 2 to 3 times a day and you can do a moisturizing mask 1 to 2 times a week.

4. Combination Skin

Combination skin is both dry and oily. There are spots on the skin that are more oily, such as the forehead, nose and chin, while other spots are more dry such as the cheeks, temples and around the eyes.

Caring Tips: This type of skin requires a lot of maintenance. You will need to use different products for different areas of the face. The oily places will need washing twice a day and a facial scrub once a week. The dry areas of skin will need washing once a day, moisturizer twice a day and you can do a moisturizing mask once a week.

5. Sensitive Skin

Some skin types are both oily and sensitive, or oily and dry. Sensitive skin usually tends to be dry though, feels tight, itchy and can get irritated very easily. Reddish patches can form and they can appear scaly and itchy. This is the most fragile type of skin and requires constant care. All products used on sensitive skin should have gentle ingredients and natural ingredients such as aloe vera.

Caring Tips: You shouldn’t wash your face with facial cleanser or acne cream more than once a day and you should use a calming moisturizer once to twice a day.

Determining your skin type will help you to take care of your skin properly. But remember that some skin can be in the middle of 2 skin types, such as normal but slightly oily skin, or dry and sensitive skin.
